This playful net installation is an interactive sculpture created by Croatian-Austrian design collective Numen/For Use, which consists of Sven Jonke, Christoph Katzler and Nikola Radeljković. It is a site-specific project developed particularly for a corridor in the OK Center for Contemporary Art in Linz.
Mirror Teacups Reflect Colorful Patterns From The Saucers They’re Place on

D-Bro, a Japanese design brand, has created a unique set of mirrored cups called “Waltz” that gain their striking patterns and colors by reflecting them from the saucers they come with.
First, the cups, which are made from Hasami porcelain, are coated with palladium, a precious metal rarer than platinum and gold. The cups must be absolutely perfect, because any small distortion or bump will ruin the effect. Next, they are matched with saucers that have anamorphic designs (much like the artwork in our anamorphic mirror art post). These designs look distorted on the saucers but are transformed into more ordered forms by the mirrored cups.
英ロイヤル・カレッジ・オブ・アート大学（Royal College of Art’s Innovation Design Engineering course）の卒業生であるジュリアン・メルキオッリ（Julian Melchiorri）氏が人工の「葉」を開発した。
光を当てると水と二酸化炭素から酸素を生成するという、世界初のバイオリーフだ。
天然の絹のタンパク質の中に、植物の細胞から取り出した葉緑体を注入するのだそうだ。すると、人工の葉ができあがるという。
人工の葉の仕組み
ジュリアン・メルキオッリ氏のアイディアは、絹の繊維から抽出されたタンパク質が分子を安定させる性質を利用して、そこに植物細胞から抽出した葉緑体を閉じ込めるというものだった。
実際にタフツ大學のシルクラボ（Tufts University silk lab）と共同で試してみると、シルクリーフ（Silk Leaf）と呼ばれる人工の葉を作ることができた。
このシルクリーフに光を与えると、植物と同様に光合成を行い、水と二酸化炭素から酸素を作ることができた。
この人工の葉は、生きている本物の植物よりもメンテナンスし易いという意味では、より取り扱いが容易な製品の試作品ができたことを示している。
人工の葉に期待できること
開発者のジュリアン・メルキオッリ氏は、この人口の葉を様々な用途に使えるのではないかと考えている。
まず彼は、見た目も洒落たランプシェードを作ってみている。このランプシェードは明かりを付けている間、部屋を照らすと同時に酸素も供給してくれるのだ。
しかし彼はもっと壮大なことを考えている。
例えばビルの外壁を、この人口の葉で覆ってしまえば、都会でも新鮮な酸素を作り出すことができるというものだ。
また、ビルの換気装置にこの人口の葉をフィルターとして使うことで、外部から取り込んだ空気に酸素を添加してビル内に送り込むことができるという。
そして最も期待されているのが宇宙開発の分野だ。
実は無重力状態では植物がうまく育たないという。また、長期間宇宙に滞在するには酸素を供給するシステムが必要だ。
そこで、この人工の葉を宇宙船や宇宙ステーション、あるいは他の惑星の基地に設置すれば、酸素を供給するシステムとして活用できるかもしれない。
一枚の人口の葉が、壮大な構想の木に育つかもしれない。

Irish designer Joseph Walsh's Magnus Celestii is an enormous, free-form sculpture that begins as a wooden desk in the center of the room before curling upwards to become a spiraling shelf. The elegant piece is currently part of the Design Show exhibition at the New Art Centre in Roche Court, Wiltshire, UK.
